This past weekend, the GSU debate team traveled to its first tournament of the year at the University of Richmond. After last year's historic success and the graduation of our top debater, we expected this year to be largely a rebuilding effort. However, the GSU sophomore team of Kevin Bottoms and Josh Grace won five of their eight preliminary debates and qualified for the elimination debates at the Richmond tournament. Kevin and Josh lost a 2-1 decision to a team from Binghamton in the octafinals, but were encouraged by their early success.
This year's college debate topic concerns whether the federal government should repeal agricultural subsidies for a number of different areas of farming. On the affirmative side of the topic, GSU teams are arguing that the government should stop subsidizing corporate animal farms (commonly called CAFOs). On the negative, we usually argue that a reduction in subsidies would risk a collapse in farmland values, threatening the nation's economy.
