Communication as an industry or economic sector is a very broad category that encompasses traditional mass communication media like newspapers and television but also includes interpersonal communication careers like sales and fundraising. It’s sometimes difficult for students to understand how an academic discipline that is fundamental to what people do every day can relate to specific careers.

Specific degree programs organize instruction around specific career paths and industry options. The Department of Communication offers four different major areas of study but portions of each have items in common: The majors are Film & Video, Journalism, Speech and Theatre.
