Moving Image Studies at GSU

The Ph.D. program in Moving Image Studies in the Department of Communication at Georgia State University is designed to teach students theories and methods that will enable them to study media well into the 21st century.

The concept of Moving Image Studies acknowledges that the boundaries separating film, television, and new media are breaking down. We believe that it is short-sighted for a Ph.D. program to recreate those boundaries in training new scholars.

Moving Image Studies is an outgrowth of cinema and television studies, new media studies, and cultural studies. Our faculty and students weave together the best of these critical, qualitative scholarly traditions (we do not focus on quantitative research or media production).

We strive to create a new type of scholar: one who is grounded in the history of media but who is also comfortable analyzing moving images regardless of where they appear.
