The Georgia State Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) attended the annual state Public Relations Society of America Conference on Friday, Feb. 28. The conference, held at The Coca Cola Plaza in Atlanta, was designed to bring communications professionals and aspiring students together for industry updates, informational sessions, panels and networking opportunities. Dr. Carrie Whitney, chapter advisor and PR Lecturer, also attended the conference with the GSU students.
One of the panels that the students attended was “The Evolved Influencer: How They’re Making an Impact.” On this panel was Danica Kombol, CEO of Everywhere Agency
, Joi Light, digital communications professional at Georgia Pacific and Aerolyn Smith, PR Professional at Porter Novelli. The panelists informed students about the importance of paying attention to the growing influencer marketing industry. They also encouraged students to seek out a number of different kinds of internships, because diversity in experience will add to a potential candidate’s attractiveness as they enter into the job field.
After lunch, students and professionals heard from Sean Greenwood, who leads public relations at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. He drew the audience in with more than just the thought of ice cream, but by explaining how their company has successfully integrated social justice and awareness into their business models.
“As other companies are backing away, Ben & Jerry’s is running towards,” Greenwood said.
He encouraged everyone in the room who works in public relations to get involved with the issues that matter to them.
“Come up with innovative products to take a stance on things,” he said. “Push the envelope more and fail faster.”
Towards the end of the day, the students participated in a networking event with communications professionals from all over the state of Georgia. They left the conference with a lot of knowledge and a lot of business cards.
