Georgia State University TV (GSUTV) will vie for glory at the prestigious Southeast Emmy Awards. The awards, which recognize television professionals from all parts of the industry and from markets in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and North Carolina, will air live from the Grand Hyatt Buckhead-Atlanta on June 16.
As Georgia State’s media station, GSUTV provides students with training for creating broadcast content and airs special programs throughout Georgia via cable, radio and digital platforms. Three of those programs have been nominated this year for Southeast Emmys.
GSUTV and Georgia Public Broadcasting have teamed up to cover the past three Shuler Hensley Awards shows, which are held each April to spotlight excellence in high school musical theater throughout Georgia. Now, the duo is up for its second Emmy nomination in as many years.
The two-hour live production of the Shuler Awards, inspired by Broadway’s Tony Awards, includes a red carpet preshow — hosted this year by Georgia State students Alahna Lark and Triny Beaty (B.A. ’17). The two were part of a crew of more than 125 industry professionals and Georgia State students who put together this year’s production.
UPDATE: GSUTV won an Emmy for their Shuler Award program.

In “Addicted: The Opioid Epidemic,” which ran as part of GSUTV’s “Special Edition” series, host Savannah Pratt (B.A. ’18) — who has already won two Southeast Emmy awards for production and editing — leads viewers into the lives of recovering opioid addicts around Georgia.
A product of four month’s work conducted entirely by Georgia State students and faculty, the documentary aired in December 2017 and is now an Emmy contender in the Documentary Topical category. Filled with gritty, compelling storytelling, “Addicted” explores the breadth of the U.S. opioid epidemic. Through interviews with addiction counselors, opioid abusers and their families, viewers are exposed to the roots of addiction and the wreckage it leaves in its wake.

“Remembering Vietnam,” nominated for an Emmy in the News Special category, first aired on Veteran’s Day in 2017 and is still a regular feature on GSUTV. The Georgia State team developed and produced this documentary special, which recognizes the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, over the course of six months.
Footage includes accounts of the war from the perspectives of veterans, anti-war activists and Vietnamese-Americans who were driven out of their homes. The piece resonated particularly with Georgia State professor and GSUTV managing director Bob Judson, who served in the United States’ 1st Infantry Division during the Tet Offensive in 1968.
Judson is writing and pre producing a follow-up documentary, “Return to Vietnam,” with Georgia State graduate student Ahn Tu Doa. It’s slated to air this year.
