ATLANTA—Georgia State University TV (GSUTV), the university’s partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting, scored big in the 2020 International Telly Awards, receiving 14 awards across several categories.
As Georgia State’s media station, GSUTV provides students with training for creating broadcast content and airs special programs throughout Georgia via cable, radio and digital platforms.
The Telly Awards honor excellence in video and television across all screens and are judged by leaders from video platforms, television, streaming networks, and production companies.
GSUTV’s Telly Awards went to:
- “Made in America,” a semi-autobiographical film by actress/director/writer/producer Armida Lopez won a gold award for directing, a silver award for writing, and a bronze award for diversity and inclusion. The short film explores two generations of a family making a home in the United States after immigrating from war-torn El Salvador.
- “Our Plastic World,” won a silver award for editing, a silver for social issues, and bronze awards for editing, writing, directing, and branded content editing. The special episode, written and produced by Riuki Gaiko, examines the environmental devastation caused by plastic pollution.
- “Indie Filmmakers: Stacey Fitzgerald” won a silver award for editing, and bronze awards for directing and for social impact. The special examines the filmmaker’s work to document the stories of the survivors of a Nazi concentration camp in WWII.
- “Off the Record: Sun Dogs” won a bronze award for directing and cinematography. The music special highlights the local Tom Petty tribute band in concert.
GSUTV programs were also recently nominated for three Southeast Emmy Awards. “Our Plastic World” was nominated for Documentary – Topical and Health/Science – Program Feature/Segment. The 2019 Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards was nominated for Special Event Coverage – Live.
The International Telly Awards and the Southeast Emmys are presented to industry professionals and organizations who are recognized for their accomplishments, said Bob Judson, Georgia State professor and GSUTV managing director.
Voting members include past winners, network and cable television executives, and peers.
“Georgia State students are an integral part of these productions and several past students have been recipients of both Tellys and Emmys,” Judson said. “The number of awards garnered by GSUTV speaks to the quality of our journalism program, the support of the college and the department of communication, and the dedication of our staff and instructors.”
