Balé Folclórico
For nearly three decades, Brazil’s Balé Folclórico da Bahia has electrified stages and delighted critics around the world with its exuberant interpretations of traditional Brazilian folk dance. The dancers, musicians, and singers routinely bring audiences to their feet—and into the aisles!—with high-energy performances combining African dance (passed down by Brazil’s black population since the days of slavery), capoeira (Afro-Brazilian martial arts), samba, and even elements of Brazil’s famed Carnival.
Off the Edge 2016
In 2012, the Rialto anchored a revolutionary dance experience gathering some of the world’s most innovative and thrilling dance companies. Now the biennial experience, co-presented with Kennesaw State University, is back and better than ever…for lovers of dance, sight, sound, movement, or simply the unexpected, experiencing Off the EDGE is a must. The 2014 iteration will be curated by Montreal-based Ilter Ibrahimof, artist manager and artistic advisor to, among others, the Festival des Arts de St. Sauveur and New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival.
The Nile Project Part 1
Conceived by an Egyptian ethnomusicologist and an Ethiopian-American singer, the Nile Project is dedicated to empowering (through music) the diverse—and sometimes conflicted—communities living along the more than 4,000 miles of the Nile River. Consisting of a dozen musicians representing each country bordering the Nile, the musicians speak many languages, use varied rhythms, and play many instruments—from Sudanese harps and Ugandan adungu lyres to Egyptian flutes. But out of this mixture comes melody—just as the Nile Project seeks to turn conflict into harmony.
Johnny Mercer Tribute 2016
Georgia’s own Johnny Mercer was one of twentieth-century America’s most prolific and beloved songwriters. Between 1929 and 1976, Mercer composed more than 1,000 songs, received nineteen Academy Award nominations and cofounded Capitol Records. A pair of modern jazz icons, Atlanta jazz vocalist Kathleen Bertrand and hard bop trumpeter and vocalist Joe Gransden, pay tribute to Mercer’s incomparable legacy by performing a selection of his many hits.
